I attended the one-day session in March and it was quite different from what I expected. I thought it would be another financial literacy talk with slides. Instead we actually sat with the documents and went through them. The reference card is sitting on my desk right now — I used it last week when my EPF statement arrived.

The four-evening programme was well-paced. My wife and I both did it together, which helped because we could check things with each other between sessions. The glossary has been useful. I would have liked a bit more time on the unit trust section — we moved through it fairly quickly — but overall it covered what it said it would cover.

I did the eight-week cohort and it was genuinely useful. The peer reading sessions were the part I got the most out of — working through the same statement as someone else and then comparing what we each noticed was more instructive than I expected. The forum was active and the facilitator responded quickly to questions posted between sessions.

Before the course I honestly used to just file the statements away without looking at them properly. Knowing that I wasn't expected to do anything with the information during the session — just understand what it said — made it much easier to focus. The facilitator was good at explaining without making you feel like you should already know this.

I'm a fresh graduate and I enrolled because I had no idea what my first EPF statement meant when it arrived. The one-day course gave me a solid enough footing to at least know what each section refers to. The group was small, which meant there was time to ask basic questions without feeling embarrassed. Worth the day out of the office.

My wife and I attended the cohort programme together. Eight weeks is a commitment but the sessions were on weekday evenings, which worked around our schedule. I appreciated that the facilitator was very clear about what Pinehurst does and does not do — it is an education course, not advice. That distinction was handled well throughout.

Participant Journeys

Three short accounts of how different participants came to Pinehurst and what changed for them after attending.

Challenge

A retiree in her early sixties who had received EPF statements for over thirty years but had never understood the difference between Account 1 and Account 2, or what the dividend figure represented. She felt uncertain asking her bank because she did not want to appear uninformed.

Course Attended

Three Statements In Plain English — one-day session. She attended alone and said later she was the only participant over fifty, which made her hesitant at first, though she found the pace suited everyone in the group.

Outcome

By the end of the session she could identify each section of her EPF statement and explain what the figures referred to. She requested a second copy of the reference card to share with her daughter.

"I wish this had existed thirty years ago. Better late than confused forever."

Challenge

A couple in their thirties who had recently started a unit trust account and found the quarterly summary reports confusing. The figures changed each quarter but they could not tell whether the changes were expected or whether something needed attention.

Course Attended

Numbers Without Numbness — four-evening programme. Both attended together. The third session covering investment summaries was most directly relevant to their situation.

Outcome

After the programme they could read their quarterly summaries with a clear understanding of what each section showed. They asked better questions when they went back to their account provider the following month.

"The sessions gave us a shared language for talking about the documents ourselves."
